Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning:
LI832: The Young Adult Services Evaluation:
This also meets Program Value #4 - Mentorship
The purpose of this course is a survey course for Young Adult services, resources, and programs. The course is to familiarize students with Young Adult literature as well as developing programs and resources for both school and public libraries. This course also teaches about the challenges and circumstances of Young Adults, and uses developmental theory to study the educational, informational, recreational, and societal needs of Young Adults ages 11-18. This artifact was created after a very careful evaluation of the resources, services, and space offered to Young Adults at the Johnson County Central Resource Library. Background research went into discovering all the demographics of Overland Park and Johnson County, and then the library was evaluated on how inviting the space was for Teens, how many resources were offered in their space, the size of the collection as well as the range of materials in the collection. The programming offered for Teens/Young Adults was also evaluated. This allowed for me to be able to practice determining exactly how well a space is or is not working for a certain set of patrons. It also gave me the chance to research Young Adult materials, spaces and programming of other libraries to allow for comparison. Everything that was evaluated in this paper gives librarians a chance to see how one library succeeds and stumbles. Certain aspects of this library can be implemented elsewhere, and being able to look at a space and at materials with an unbiased view allows for future spaces to be better than what was there before. This demonstrates that I can evaluate a range of library materials, resources and spaces for Young Adults and then develop solutions to improve things that aren't working. This also demonstrates that I have a desire to continually make the library a better and valuable place for all patrons, of any age group.
