Foundations of the Profession:
LI829: The Storytelling Video:
The course purpose of L1829 is to teach future librarians about resources and information for Early Learners and their caregivers or family members. This course is designed for librarians to learn how to create appropriate programming and adapt other services that will foster learning and literacy in children in the ages before and during kindergarten. The theory for this course is mainly driven by a previously acquired theory knowledge about early literacy and language acquisition. A specific theory that is a part of the course is the "Emergent Literacy Theory" by Marie Clay, developed in 1966, which theorizes that literacy begins at birth. With this particular artifact, I selected a book that was age-appropriate for Early Learners, and then had to record myself and publish the video online. It was made to practice storytelling techniques and to critique myself afterward, so that I could improve my storytelling abilities and to appeal to Early Learners which therefore promotes literacy by successfully reaching the intended learners. This artifact demonstrates my current skills in storytelling, selecting materials appropriately for children, my understanding of the importance of early literacy, and my desire to meet the needs of the patrons both within and outside the library by making the video readily available to the public.
LI801: The Ethics Case Newspaper:
This also meets Program Value #3 - Integrity
The course purpose of LI801 is to introduce students to many various aspects of an information society, including information roles, transfers and information understanding. This class introduces students to information agents and agencies as well as the ethics and ethical issues of working with information in libraries and outside of libraries. One of the theories studied in this course was Richard Severson's four principles of information ethics, which emphasized the ethics of: Respect for Intellectual Property, Respect for Privacy, Fair Representation and Malfeasance. The particular artifact studies intellectual property, and it was made with three of my peers (Christen Caton, Sandra Findley, and Becky Adams) and presented to the class. We created a newspaper that focused on a particular hypothetical case of internet use and the library's place to enforce restrictions or not on the use of wireless internet. Severson's theory played a large part in how we examined the case, and the different perspectives that patrons might have about use of wireless internet outside of the library during non-business hours. With this case examination, it gave me practice in dealing with something that is a very real situation in public libraries today, and gave insight about how to handle conflicting patron issues and needs. Ultimately, it was a tool to teach me the value of intellectual freedom, which is one of the ALA core values. This artifact demonstrates my ability to look at and analyze a situation from multiple perspectives, as well as my ability to work through a difficult situation with peers to come up with a solution for the entire library.
