Technological Knowledge and Skills:
LI804: The Digital Libraries Research Paper:
The purpose of this course is to expose information professionals to many different aspects of organizing information, and it gives the students the chance to examine tools, classification systems, practices, issues and analyses of the organization of information. There is also a focus on learning how to identify different organizational practices and approaches while they are in action, in many different settings and situations. This course was laden with theory, and this artifact, a collaborative paper with two of my peers (Terry Chartier and Sandra Findley), looked at OverDrive and its use within the Kansas library system. This collaborative paper is a result of looking at different types of schemas and information architectures. This paper also explored the importance of metadata to select a system of research through an examination of a current Kansas library system. Currently OverDrive is being used as a way to organize eBooks and audiobooks for the Kansas library system, which smaller libraries can give a certain amount of money to participate in the consortium. This artifact shows how OverDrive allows patrons to easily search for and use electronic resources that the library owns and has available. OverDrive offers resources in many different formats, and allows for patrons who may not have the ability to go into the library to still utilize the library's resources through OverDrive's technology. Working with my peers on this paper gave me the opportunity to look into e-resources, and what they can provide, or perhaps what they are limited to as an organizational system of eBooks and audio books. I was able to practice looking into the costs of a digital system like this, and to see examples and real numbers about the usage. I was also able to learn more about how consortiums work, and how libraries can benefit or be limited to such resource sharing systems. This demonstrates my ability to develop and acquire digital materials for the library, and how I can use my knowledge about technology to disseminate information to a patron base.
LI815: The Lesson Plan for Seniors (lesson outline and powerpoint):
The purpose of this course is to give information professionals basic knowledge about technology skills and concepts needed in any library setting. The course covers internet and web resources and services as well as knowledge about hardware, software, databases, networking and many emerging technologies. It is focused on giving librarians the information necessary to evaluate and select technology to use throughout public, private and university libraries. The information cycle was also a driving theory used in this course, since it also applies to how information travels technologically, and how librarians can utilize that cycle to select and use the best technology available for each particular library setting. This artifact (in two parts) was a collaborative effort with some of my peers (Ashley Swan and Sandra Findley) in my cohort. We analyzed our interactions with senior citizens in our lives, and we found a need in new technology, particularly with iPad usage. This lesson plan is in two parts, the outline provided is a detailed lesson plan for the teacher of the library course, and the power point provided is an example of what could be used during a lesson to senior citizens about iPads. We presented both pieces to our class, and also provided a "cheat sheet" that could be handed out after an iPad lesson is concluded. iPads are very popular technology at the moment, and more and more people get them every day, even if they don't really know how to get a handle on them. This was practicing ways to evaluate the needs of patrons on a day to day basis, understanding how technology impacts patrons, and how the library can develop a quick and informative lesson and course to assist patrons with their needs. This demonstrates that I can develop a lesson plan for library courses, that I can assess the technology needs of a library, and that I can use technology to teach and reach various types of patrons.
