Organization of Recorded Knowledge and Information:
LI815: The Open Source Project Powerpoint:
The purpose of this course is to give information professionals basic knowledge about technology skills and concepts needed in any library setting. The course covers internet and web resources and services as well as knowledge about hardware, software, databases, networking and many emerging technologies. It is focused on giving librarians the information necessary to evaluate and select technology to use throughout public, private and university libraries. The information cycle was also a driving theory used in this course, since it also applies to how information travels technologically, and how librarians can utilize that cycle to select and use the best technology available for each particular library setting. This artifact is an informational powerpoint that I developed about an Open Source platform known as Wordpress. It is a a powerpoint that gives the background of Wordpress' development and how it can be utilized in many different ways, and how libraries can benefit from using an Open Source platform like Wordpress. Investigating many types of Open Source platforms and technologies before selecting Wordpress as a focus gave me the practice of deciding what operations and systems would work best in particular library settings. This also gave me a chance to evaluate Open Source platforms as a whole, since they are not the best answer for every library, even though they allow for much more customization and personalization. This project also gave me the opportunity to practice evaluating many different emergent technologies and thinking about patron usability with customizable web resources along with what technology is currently available. This demonstrates my desire and knowledge toward developing a user-friendly and sustainable system that makes it easy to access information in a library, no matter what platform is being employed.
