LI855: The Publishing Pathfinder:
This also meets Program Value #1 - Service
The purpose of this course is to teach library students how to select and develop a collection for a library that suits today's technological and modern purposes. It is also a study of policies and procedures in evaluation and selection of resources and materials of various library settings. Intellectual freedom, library collection ethics, and budgeting are all issues that were focused on in this course. While there was theory presented throughout the course, the main focus of the course was to look at real libraries and to practice developing library collections, policies, and evaluation skills. This artifact is one of the most practical artifacts that I developed during my entire academic experience in this program. We were given the opportunity to select a topic that fit our interests, and then to create a Pathfinder on that topic. I was tasked with selecting reputable and valuable resources for my topic, then to make up the Pathfinder, which is a listing of information that can be utilized and is known by the user to contain good sources of information. My topic was about publishing. I listed books, websites, and other online resources to guide users to information about agents, publishing companies, self-publishing, query letters, and other issues involved with getting published. This Pathfinder gave me the chance to practice going through a sea of information to pick out things that were valuable and reputable, as well as factual. It also gave me the opportunity to learn how to build a website, so that the information could reach a wide audience. This demonstrates that during this program I have developed a critical eye and mind for strong source material and resources from what I have learned in my courses about valuable, user-centered resources. It also demonstrates technological skills that are valuable in the 21st century library, and my commitment to quality services.
LI832: The Young Adult Literature Blog:
The purpose of this course is a survey course for Young Adult services, resources, and programs. The course is to familiarize students with Young Adult literature as well as developing programs and resources for both school and public libraries. This course also teaches about the challenges and circumstances of Young Adults, and uses developmental theory to study the educational, informational, recreational, and societal needs of Young Adults ages 11-18. This artifact was a blog that was developed with a wide array of Young Adult literature that was self-selected. The purpose of the blog was to expose students to Young Adult literature as a whole, and the many different genres and facets within the literature. Each blog posting had required examination of literary elements in each novel, as well as an overall review of the material from both an educational and recreational standpoint. This blog gave me practice in selecting not only good, strong literature, but it also gave me practice in understanding popular material and connecting with young readers by reading what they enjoy reading. This demonstrates my knowledge in collection development and selection, as well as my ability to understand user needs by evaluating materials of many different genres and subjects for a particular age group and user base. This also demonstrates my ability to meet the users where they are (online), by creating a blog that Young Adults could, (if published online) access and use as a tool to select materials for themselves.
